During the 2024-2025 academic year, we are hosting workshops to support students engaged in campus organizing.
Topic: Legal Defense Strategies
Date: Tuesday, October 1 from 3-5:30pm
Location: UMass Amherst
Description: Building off the lessons of providing legal support to UMass Amherst student encampment organizers, we are kicking off the series with a workshop on developing legal defense strategies for direct actions. Attorneys Rachel W., Elliot O. and Tyler I. will be facilitating the workshop, and will focus on the different approaches to legal support and why having a plan ahead of an action is crucial.Topic: Legal Observing Training

Description: National Lawyers Guild trainer Elliot Oberholtzer will train participants on how to act as Legal Observers, whose role at movement actions is to monitor police behavior and document arrests. Participants in this training will be added to the NLG Legal Observer list and eligible to LO at future actions.Topic: Direct Action

Description: Demilitarize Western Mass organizers will deliver a training on strategies and considerations for direct actions.Topic: Security Culture Training
Date: Thursday November 21st, 6:00-7:30pm
Location: Peace Development Fund
Description: Join us at for a workshop on security culture. Decarcerate Western Mass organizer June will deliver a training on security culture. June (she/they) is a crip, an abolitionist, a librarian, and several other things. She cares a lot about loving other people.
This training will cover:How to make sure the state and other bad actors stay out of our business.
Mitigating risk in planning actions and building campaigns.
Going beyond “don’t talk to cops.”
How security culture can sometimes be weaponized, or be an excuse for ableism, classism, and racism.
