The Decarcerate Western Mass Bailout Project is fiscally sponsored by the Peace Development Fund.
Through our fiscal sponsor, the Peace Development Fund (PDF), a 501(c)(3) public foundation, our supporters (you!) are able to make tax-deductible donations. PDF will provide you with the appropriate tax receipt.
Your support could mean the difference between someone being detained pretrial for days, or years.
People who are being held in jail because they cannot afford to pay bail have not been convicted of a crime. Unless they have enough money to buy their freedom, they can be held for weeks, months, or sometimes even years in “pretrial detention” until their cases are heard.
This is unjust and inhumane. People who are in jail, waiting for their case to be resolved, risk losing their jobs, their homes, and their children. They also risk their health (physical and mental) and, especially in the age of COVID, they may be risking their life.
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we have been able to free 36 people since the launch of this fund in February 2021. We receive 3-7 requests on average each week, and bail amounts can range anywhere from $25 to $20,000. We currently have far more requests than we can fulfill. As of May 25, 2021, we have had 40 referrals for bail assistance, requesting a total of $106,500.
It is critical to free these people as soon as possible, and we can’t do it without your help.
Together, we can keep people in their communities and with their families. Please consider donating today.
